Unhappy Déces de Francisco Pereira

Sad news posted to the CARS website.

ANNOUNCEMENT
May 20, 2009

This morning, CARS received the sad news that a long time ralliest, Francisco Pereira, passed away this morning in Portugal from cancer. In earlier email correspondence, Terry had become aware that Francisco had been diagnosed with neo plazias (cancer masses) in his mid section. Francisco did not want the sport to know he was ill and so we are sure this news will come as a shock to very many people in this sport who knew him. Francisco’s wishes were for cremation and that his ashes be spread in the ocean. At this point in time, we have no other details on any planned arrangements or services back here in Canada.

Francisco had told Terry that it all started at the 2008 Rocky Mountain Rally where he competed despite feeling quite ill. From there, he went from specialist after specialist from Toronto to New York, but nothing could be found to indicate what the problem was. He flew to Portugal on March 2 and checked into hospital emergency the following day where doctors discovered the cancer. He underwent two major surgeries and, at last word was waiting to heal from his last surgery in mid April before flying back home to Canada to look for treatment options. Unfortunately, the disease did not allow him to do that.

Francisco has a daughter, Melissa, who is in grade twelve and our thoughts and sincere condolences go out to her at this very difficult time.

For those in the sport who knew him and those who only saw his name in the results of events, there was a lot about Francisco that stood out. He was passionate about the sport and he made many friends over the years. He was a very talented driver who enjoyed going fast and he had a lot of very impressive finishes including fourth overall in the 2008 Rally New York with Adam Vokes as his co-driver. At the 2008 Rallye Baie-des-Chaleurs, he was the victim of two occurrences that combined to create one of those rally stories that will live for a long time in the sport when he hit a moose with the service rig on the way to the event and a deer with the rally car in the first stage. It was just the beginning of a wild event for Francisco when later his co-driver pulled from the event because of illness at the end of day one and a substitute co-driver, Mike Koch, started the Saturday regional portion of the event. So while he finished every stage of the event, Francisco DNF’d the national and finished the regional.

Francisco started rallying in 1990 at the Rallye Perce-Neige and he finished that first event. His Galo Rally Team competed in six national events that year. He also competed in events throughout 1993-1996. He was also active in establishing the first RallyCross series to exist in Ontario and he founded the Portuguese Rally Club which was a CARS RSO member club for several years. He dropped out the sport for several years and re-established his rally licence in 2008 when he bought a Mitsubishi Evo rally car and registered for the Mitsubishi Rally Support program.

Francisco will be sorely missed.

Par défaut

C'est vrai que son histoire du rallye BDC 2008 va lui survivre longtemps...

Triste nouvelle
